Whether you are recognizing National Nothing Day (January 16th) or National Burb Day (January 7th)…wait! - Let that sink in, these days are legitimate 😂. However, as a Government Communication Professional, it is your job to discern which to recognize and what to throw away. We all want public engagement but at the cost of credibility? Here are three do’s and don’t’s to consider for your organization.

Dos:

1. Research the significance of the day or month to ensure your messaging is accurate and respectful.

2. Showcase how your organization aligns with the theme or purpose of the national recognition.

3. Engage with your community by sharing relevant content and encouraging participation in related events.

Don'ts:

1. Don't tokenize or exploit the day for marketing purposes if it does not align with your organization's values.

2. Avoid appropriating cultures or using stereotypes in your communications.

3. Don't overlook the opportunity to educate and raise awareness about important issues associated with the national recognition.

In conclusion, there are many national recognition days to choose from, so be selective and prioritize the ones that align with your organization's communication goals and resonate with your community.
