Happy Mother's Day! Every year on Mother’s Day, I reflect on my mother’s (Myrtle H. Lynch) impact on my life. I lost my mom more than 20 years ago, but her teachings and knowledge are still infused into my professional behavior. My introspection this year, was intense as I looked at the commonalities between everyday life and communications theory and protocol. Here are 3 behavioral practices that translate perfectly into communications theory.
The first phrase, "Don't speak unless you have something to say"
This phrase can be compared to Grice's Maxims of Communication. According to Grice, effective communication involves being informative, truthful, relevant, and clear. By only speaking when you have something valuable to contribute to the conversation, you are following these maxims and ensuring your message is meaningful and impactful.
The second phrase, "When you speak, speak boldly and with confidence"
This phrase aligns with the concept of assertiveness in communication theory. Assertiveness involves expressing your thoughts and opinions clearly and confidently, while also respecting the thoughts and opinions of others. Speaking boldly and confidently, you not only convey your message effectively but also inspire confidence in those around you.
The third phrase, "Actions should always follow your words"
This phrase is reminiscent of the Theory of Congruence in communication. Congruence suggests that words and actions should align to build trust and credibility. Ensuring that your actions reflect your words reinforces the authenticity and sincerity of your communication.
My mother played a significant role in laying the foundation for my communications career. She always emphasized the importance of speaking with clarity, confidence, and honesty. These best practices have guided me throughout my career and have allowed me to find success in a field that I am truly passionate about. By following these principles, I have built strong relationships, inspired trust, and made a positive impact through effective communication. Thanks, Mom, and Happy Mother's Day.
