Video Editing Deadlines

Managing a video project’s deadline is complex and can be tedious. In many cases, in Government Communications the producers have several jobs. The videographer (shoots the footage), The writer (writes the scripts) and the Editor( edits the video footage). In the real world, these jobs are separated, allowing for a more efficient process. In my experience, most government agencies rely on a “one-man band” to facilitate these tasks. That’s why we get paid the big bucks. (insert emoji here)

Here are five tips to help you meet those deadlines without losing your mind:

1. Plan ahead

Make sure to create a detailed schedule outlining all the tasks that need to be completed before the deadline. It is good to assign specific dates on which task should be done on what date. If the deadline is today - then set an hourly schedule. This will help you stay organized and focused on what needs to be done.

2. Take breaks

Everyone edits differently, In my process the breaks are crucial and I use them as “little rewards” to get me through a difficult project. So I schedule them! I break the project up into sections. I collect my assets: clips, voice, audio, and titles. I schedule the work as follows:

  • Video Base - create the project’s video base - place clips on the timeline in order (take a break).

  • Audio Base - organize and make audio corrections (take a break).

  • Add Titles - create, place, edit video titles, and check spelling (take a break).

  • Color Grade - adjust the feel of the video through colorization (take a break).

  • Review and export into various formats - celebrate! (usually with food).

Scheduling breaks allows for increased creativity and mental space, thereby giving you a process that is relaxing and stress-free. It's important to give yourself some time to rest and recharge.

3. Communicate with your team

Keep your team in the loop about the progress of the project and any potential roadblocks. This will help everyone stay on the same page and work together to meet the deadline. if anything pops up that will delay do not hesitate to tell your manager, keeping an open line of communication is better than missing the deadline unexpectedly.

4. Prioritize tasks

If you have a particular task that you have difficulty with allow for more time to finish. In video production, it is hard to focus on completing the most important tasks first and leave less critical ones for later. So develop a personalized workflow this will ensure that the most crucial elements of the project are completed on time.

5. Have fun!

Yes, this is the most important. You selected this professional because it develops your skill set and provides a creative outlet. Try different techniques, use different software, and challenge yourself. Over time you will accomplish great achievements and become reputable in your field.

Remember, meeting deadlines is all about staying organized, communicating effectively, and taking care of yourself.
